A Richness of Martens

Wildlife Tales from Ardnamurchan

Polly Pullar - Illustrations by Sharon Tingey - Foreword by John Lister-Kaye

Polly Pullar saw her first pine marten during her childhood spent in Ardnamurchan. Then exceedingly rare, this beautiful member of the weasel family had been persecuted to near extinction. Years later, as the marten population was recovering, she met Les and Chris Humphreys who had retired to the shores of Loch Sunart. Intrigued that the Humphreys had turned their garden over to martens and had formed an extraordinary close bond with them, she found that their detailed records, camera footage and observations provided fascinating evidence to challenge previous theories as well as capturing the martens' hilarious interactions with badgers, foxes, hedgehogs and other creatures.
Not simply a passionate, information and entertaining portrait of a misunderstood mammal with a penchant for mischief, this is also a glorious and deeply personal celebration of Ardnamurchan's Atlantic oak woods through the author's intimate encounters with its diverse wildlife, as well as a passionate portrait of nature in other remote and wild parts of the Highlands.
